Product Description

Chuck Stewart apprenticed with the great jazz photoportraitist Herman Leonard and became friendly with the likes of Basie and Ellington; made the opening-night scene at Birdland; and achieved an intimacy with his many subjects that shines from his photographic record of the classic years of jazz. Stewart handles his camera with the casual excellence of Grant Green or Wayne Shorter: instrument at hand and ready to do the right thing. Just as they and the other greats featured here—Ray Bryant, Doc Cheatham, Jimmy Cobb, Red Garland, Urbie Green, Chico Hamilton, James Moody, Patti Page, Tito Puente, and Frank Strozier—are pure embodiments of jazz music, Chuck Stewart is a pure jazz photographer.

January Caption for Classic JazzJimmy Cobb Anyone familiar with Miles Davis’s groundbreaking Kind of Blue or Sketches of Spain has been introduced to the multifaceted, mood-setting percussion of Jimmy Cobb. Born in 1929, the mostly self-schooled drummer provided a rhythmic backbone for the bands of Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, and Dizzy Gillespie before entering a six-year association with Davis. After that era, Cobb played with master guitarist Wes Montgomery and for nine years hit the skins for dynamic vocalist Sarah Vaughan. Cobb, a current elder statesman of jazz, has performed for US presidents and foreign dignitaries and is still recording (with the likes of pianist and patriarch Ellis Marsalis) and performing worldwide.
