Artist: The Pan African Orchestra

Ghana-based producer Nana Danso Abiam took on the ambitious project of combining instruments, folk music and musicians from all over the continent of Africa to create one standardized style of music deemed "African classical." Although considered controversial and marred by financial difficulties, the project was able to get off the ground, and OPUS 1 is a sampling of their rich, multicultural sound. This 28-member orchestra plays a variety of instruments, including bamboo flutes (atenteben), xylophones, violins, lutes, horns and a variety of drums. The songs are re-interpretations of local village themes, extended to symphonic length and performed using instruments that, in some cases, are not often heard played together. This is a fascinating celebration of African culture that should not be missed !
